Rugged individualism and an idealism that called for the constant striving for perfection, to the mind of the Pilgrims, required a spartan discipline on the part of old and young alike. Frontier people have always had an inordinate concern with vice. It would seem from their preoccupation that vice is more prevalent in the primitive society than in the more civilized and stable community.
